Job Description
The Department of Medical Genetics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Manager. This full time fixed‑term position is for approximately 6 months (based on the length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. The position reports to the Principal Investigator.
Summary of Key Responsibilities Responsible for management, maintenance, or control of a specialized area Involved in day‑to‑day supervision of staff, monitoring, planning, and organising activities of others Assist with plans and designs for specialised applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services Participate in the design and development of precision equipment and processes Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the lab Under limited supervision and direction, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for various users, including stocking of all necessary materials and supplies Train and supervise other staff, students, and faculty in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community Manage own time effectively and ensure immediate reports to manager are kept informed of activities and progress of work Demonstrate strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgement within established guidelines Extensive understanding, continued learning and development of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization Document and report research results to PI Prepare figures and present data in lab meetings (1–2 times per month) Qualifications / Requirements Minimum PhD in Molecular Biology or related area is required, with post‑doctoral experience preferred Minimum 5 years of technical experience and completion of post‑secondary education in related discipline Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques Previous technical experience required Cell culture Microscopy Molecular biology techniques (e.g., cloning, DNA/RNA/protein isolation, PCR, Western blot) Data analysis Preferred Experience Flow cytometry staining and analysis ELISAs Viral transduction Work with iPSC CRISPR-Cas9 technologies Additional Requirements Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization Operate and maintain complex technical equipment Experience with writing scientific manuscripts, literature reviews and/or grant applications Experience with individually managing a research project Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, problem‑solving, and interpersonal skills Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), internet skills Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable WHIMS Certification Application Deadline: July6,2026 EEO / Diversity Statement UCalgary is an equitable and inclusive employer.
