Medical Laboratory assistant

Job Description
MCS is partnering with the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust to recruit a dedicated, detail-oriented professional to join their Laboratories, Surgery and Specialist Services directorate as a Band 3 Medical Laboratory Assistant. Based within the Belfast Trust Laboratories, this is a vital role supporting the technical and practical delivery of a comprehensive laboratory service. This isn't a role for someone who wants a standard 9-to-5 routine.
This is for an adaptable laboratory professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is ready to support critical clinical operations. Requirements: Qualifications & Experience: 1 year's relevant laboratory experience. Availability: Ability to fully cover a 24-hour service, including extended working days, overnights, weekends, and bank/public holidays as part of a conditioned 37.5-hour work week.
Skills: Strong communication skills, ability to work on your own initiative as well as part of a team, and a highly flexible approach to work. Your Responsibilities: Sample Reception & Pre-Analysis: Performing general sample reception duties, sorting and distributing specimens, processing data within the labs, and handling the layout and distribution of lab reports. Technical Assistance: Preparing specimens for analysis, operating and loading various analysers and instruments under supervision, and handling basic troubleshooting or recording maintenance faults.
Equipment & Stock Maintenance: Carrying out day-to-day equipment maintenance (including cleaning and calibration procedures), keeping a clean working area, and managing stock levels of essential consumables. Laboratory Support: Preparing required solutions/reagents, securely removing and disposing of laboratory waste according to departmental procedures, and assisting with the delivery and storage of incoming goods. Team Collaboration: Liaising closely with section heads regarding daily workloads, mentoring and training new or rotating staff, and attending team meetings.
Why This Role? This role offers a unique opportunity to build a rewarding career within a specialised branch of healthcare science. You will work within a supportive team environment that champions high standards of personal accountability and public service confidence.
The Belfast Trust is deeply committed to ensuring a clean, safe, and collaborative workplace where all staff contribute directly to high-quality patient care and infection prevention. What's on Offer: Competitive Salary: Band 3 £12.75/h | Shift-inclusive conditioned 37.5-hour week. 24/7 Operations: Ideal for those seeking dynamic shift patterns. Professional Growth: Gain hands-on exposure to advanced analytical instruments and structured competency training.
