Job Purpose
The Director provides overall leadership and day-to-day management for the Athletic Training and Sports Performance units within the Department of Physical Education and Athletics. This role carries full supervisory responsibility for all Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance staff members and oversees the operations of both the Athletic Training Room and the Athletic Performance Center. The Director works in close partnership with faculty and staff coaches across all 21 varsity athletic programs.
The Director will expand the curriculum by teaching Physical Education courses in health-related areas and providing internship opportunities for students interested in the Health Sciences and Sports Performance fields. As a senior member of the Department of Physical Education senior administrative team, the Director plays a meaningful role in shaping the direction of the department by contributing to major decisions, informing long‑range planning, and helping develop and execute the strategic vision for both Pomona College Physical Education and Pomona‑Pitzer Athletics. This position carries a coterminous faculty appointment.
In that capacity, the Director participates in the regular faculty review process, with evaluation criteria established by the Physical Education Department and governed by the Pomona College Faculty Handbook.
Essential Functions
- Directs all aspects of Athletic Training Room and Athletic Performance.
- Ensures that all departmental curricular offerings, specifically Varsity Athletics, are a safe learning and growth environment and are in compliance with NCAA rules.
- Provides overall leadership and manages the full‑time staff of the Athletic Training Room and Athletic Performance Center including hiring, training and performance.
- Oversees the scheduling and coordination of staff assignments for coverage of team practices and competitions.
- Maintains effective communication and relationships necessary to provide leadership, direction and education to the Department of Physical Education and Athletics in the areas of health, medical clearance, safety & injury prevention, injury recognition, emergency response, compliance with treatment programs, athletic performance and overall scheduling for varsity athletic teams.
- Develops policies, procedures and manages delivery of sports medicine and athletic performance services including testing, evaluation, treatment of injuries, rehabilitation and medical management.
- Manages athletic training facility including budgets, equipment, supplies, inventory, purchasing, maintenance and replacement.
- Coordinates and communicates services with staff for injured student‑athletes, advises coaches daily on medical status of injured student‑athletes and determines ability for student‑athletes to practice and compete.
- Teaches courses in the Department of Physical Education in the area of Athletic Training and oversees Independent Studies in the field of Athletic Reviews, evaluates and recommends techniques and equipment that enhance the Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance.
- Serves as the primary athletic trainer for specific varsity.
- Maintains the Department’s professional connections to the local medical community and instructs fellows/residents of local medical facilities.
- Monitors and verifies certifications and continuing education for all Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance staff.
- Serves as the department liaison to the SCIAC Athletic Trainers and NCAA on Sports Medicine and Athletic performance related matters.
- Serves on Pomona College, SCIAC and NCAA committees as needed.
Qualifications
- Education: Master’s Degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology or a related field required.
- Licenses/Certificates: Certification from National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATABOC) CPR/AED (or ability to obtain prior to the start date) required; NSCA CSCS certification preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in sports medicine and collegiate athletic training, including demonstrated supervisory or leadership responsibility. Experience at an academic institution is preferred.

- Deploy professional skills in Sports Medicine and Athletic Performance, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic mission and communicate the mission and history of the College’s liberal arts environment.
- Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of employees.
- Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Show understanding of the use of technology/devices/equipment in assessing and improving department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
- Handle highly confidential information with discretion and good judgment.
- Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines.
- Demonstrate exceptional organizational and time‑management skills.
- Knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA, and NCAA health and safety‑related requirements.
Additional Position Details
This position is a regular, full‑time, exempt position. Annual Salary is between $90,000–$115,000 with a competitive benefits package. Factors considered include education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance.

Required Hours
The regular hours for this full‑time position are 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday. Hours may vary due to the needs of athletic teams and students balancing their academic schedules. Holiday, evening, and weekend hours are required. Travel may be required.
