Development Program / Software Engineer - Entry Level (Maryland) Fort George G. NSA is seeking Software Engineers to advance a number of high impact systems and teams. Recent needs include large‑scale platform development (hardware and software, HPC, cloud); accessibility development (508 compliance); AI/ML; complex algorithms and cryptography. Job Summary As a new Software Engineer, NSA offers opportunities to contribute, learn, and grow in virtually any Computer Science focus area, including Cybersecurity, High Performance Computing (HPC), Quantum Computing Research, Data Analytics, Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI), Cryptology/Cryptography, and countless others. Applicants will be selected to go directly into a development program that spans three years with rotational tours to develop skills across the Agency. Qualifications Minimum acceptable qualifications include a degree in Computer Science (CS) or Software Engineering.
Related fields (e.g., Engineering, Mathematics) may be considered if they contain a concentration of courses in these foundational CS areas: algorithms; computer architecture (not network architecture); programming methodologies and languages; data structures; logic and computation; and advanced mathematics (calculus, discrete mathematics). Relevant experience must cover the software development process (requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, integration, deployment/installation, maintenance) and programming. Strong background in advanced mathematics (number theory, abstract algebra, linear algebra, probability theory, discrete mathematics) Solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and computer architecture Proficiency in languages such as C/C++, Python, and Java Knowledge of symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, hash functions, encryption, digital signatures, and key exchange Familiarity with protocols like TLS/SSL, network security principles, secure communications, and secure computing platforms Experience with security event management (SIEM), intrusion detection systems (IDS), and vulnerability assessment tools Knowledge of cryptographic libraries, APIs, and adherence to security standards (NIST, ISO 27001, OWASP) Teamwork, leadership, and strong interpersonal skills Entry path includes a Bachelor’s degree with no experience required.
An Associate’s degree plus two years of relevant experience may be considered for individuals with significant experience directly related to the position. Salary ranges from $87,362 to $123,388 based on education and experience.
