Summary
Under the supervision of and direction of an anesthesia provider, the incumbent participates in the implementation and assurance of high‑quality patient care, evaluation and documentation preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. The intern will assist the CRNA or Anesthesiologist with pre‑ and post‑operative assessments, accurately monitor patients, and perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), ventilation or life support measures during emergencies. The incumbent will ensure operation and monitoring of equipment, assure that adequate supplies are available for perioperative cases, and assist the anesthesia provider with preparation of blocks, point‑of‑care laboratory testing, nursing care for recovery and transport as needed.
Participation in other departmental/professional duties, including educational and experiential opportunities toward becoming a licensed CRNA, is also expected.
Responsibilities
- Under continuous supervision of a licensed CRNA, participate in the plan of care during procedures while keeping patient safety a priority; assist with post‑anesthesia care and evaluation (≈ 50%).
- Assist operating room RN staff within the scope of RN practice and provide assistance in physical monitoring (≈ 30%).
- Assemble equipment and supplies for procedures; monitor the sterile field (≈ 30%).
- Participate in staff development by attending in‑services, educational meetings, staff meetings, and seminars as requested by anesthesia leadership (≈ 20%).
- Other duties: perform point‑of‑care laboratory testing; assist anesthesia provider during intubations; maintain immediate availability for routine and emergency procedures; assist with preparation of equipment for regional blocks in the pre‑operative holding area.
- Access medication and supply rooms for stocking; troubleshoot invasive lines and anesthesia equipment; ensure equipment is disinfected and cleaned per infection control policy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – required, with equivalent experience within 1 month of hire or transfer.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – required, with equivalent experience within 1 month of hire or transfer.
- Registered Nurse (RN) – required; equivalent experience within 1 month of hire or transfer.
Required Education
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) at the time of hire or transfer, and acceptance into an accredited CRNA program. Equivalent experience may be acceptable within the same timeframe.
Experience, Training & Skills
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing and currently enrolled with a minimum period of 6 months in an accredited CRNA program.
• Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels.
• One year of critical care nursing experience in the intensive care unit (ICU) or emergency department required.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.
• Competency in Microsoft Windows; further learning opportunities may be required through MyMichigan Health.
Physical & Mental Requirements & Typical Working Conditions
- Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
- Must wear personal protective equipment that may include latex.
- Must be able to move freely around the facility with or without assistive devices.
- Must have general vision and hearing; assistive devices may be used.
- Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk for long periods; may need to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- May be exposed to blood‑borne pathogens and other infectious materials; blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing is required.
- Must handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance and stay alert.
- Requires overall dexterity including handling, reaching, grasping, and frequent repetitive movements.
- Physical demands are classified as Light: occasional (0‑33% of the day) lift/carry 11‑20 lbs., frequent (34‑66%) 10 lbs., and movement of arm/leg controls.
