Job Description
As a GSS Personal Property Tax Compliance Associate, you will:The Personal Property Tax Compliance Staff is responsible for supporting the preparation, filing, and ongoing management of personal property tax obligations across multiple jurisdictions. This role ensures compliance with state and local tax regulations by maintaining accurate asset records, meeting filing deadlines, and assisting with audits and assessments. Duties and Responsibilities:Prepare and file personal property tax returns in compliance with state and local requirementsMaintain detailed fixed asset and property records, including cost, location, and classificationTrack and monitor filing deadlines to ensure timely submissionsAssist in gathering and organizing data for tax filings, including asset additions, disposals, and transfersReview assessment notices for accuracy and support the appeal process where necessaryResearch jurisdictional filing requirements, tax rates, and regulatory changesSupport tax audits by providing requested documentation and responding to inquiriesReconcile property tax accounts and assist with accruals and payment processingCollaborate with accounting, finance, and operations teams to ensure accurate reportingMaintain compliance calendars and internal documentation of processes and procedures Job Competencies, Skills & AbilitiesBasic understanding of state and local tax (SALT) concepts, especially personal property taxFamiliarity with depreciation methods and fixed asset accountingStrong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., data manipulation, formulas, and large datasets)Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and analysisAbility to interpret tax notices, assessment forms, and jurisdictional requirementsStrong organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple deadlinesEffective written and verbal communication skillsAnalytical mindset with problem-solving capabilityAbility to work independently and collaboratively in a team environmentAdaptability in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environmentStrong client service orientation (if external-facing role)Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of financial information
What you bring to the role:Education: Bachelor's business degreeLICENSURE(S) REQUIRED: Progress toward CPA, MST, or other relevant certificationMinimum of 1+ years of progressive property tax compliance experience from either public accounting, consulting, industry, or Department of Revenue.Experience preparing personal property tax returns or renditionsExposure to tax research tools or compliance software (e.g., PTMS, Avalara, OneSource)Knowledge of lease accounting and asset classification for tax purposesFamiliarity with multi-state or multi-jurisdiction compliance requirements0-3 years of experience in tax, accounting, or compliance
